Toronto Dental Bridges
A fixed replacement for the tooth that is missing
Close the gap without taking anything in and out
A missing tooth is not only a gap you can see. The teeth on either side start to lean into the space, the tooth above or below it drifts down, and chewing quietly moves to the other side of your mouth. A bridge closes the gap with a replacement tooth held in place by the teeth next to it, and it stays put.
We plan our Toronto dental bridges from a digital iTero scan and have them made by a dental lab, so the fit, the bite and the shade are all checked before anything is cemented. Most patients who ask us about a bridge have either just lost a tooth or have been living around the gap for a while and want it settled.
How does a dental bridge work at Canary Dental?
01
Examine & Plan
We take digital x-rays, look at the gap, the teeth on either side, and how your bite closes, and talk through both a bridge and an implant so you can compare them properly.
02
Shape The Supporting Teeth
The area is fully numbed first. The teeth on either side of the gap are shaped so the bridge seats flush over them, in much the same way we prepare a tooth for a dental crown.
03
Scan & Match
An iTero scan captures the whole span without impression putty. We choose the shade against your neighbouring teeth while you are sitting there.
04
Temporary Bridge
You leave with a temporary bridge so you can eat and talk normally while the lab builds the final one.
05
Fit & Cement
We check the fit, the bite, and how floss passes underneath before it goes on for good.
When are Toronto dental bridges the right call?
- One or two teeth missing in a row, with healthy teeth on both sides of the gap
- The teeth either side already need crowns, so they are being covered anyway
- Your jawbone will not support an implant without grafting first and you would rather not go down that road
- A medical reason, a medication or healing time makes implant surgery a poor fit right now
- You want the gap closed in a matter of weeks rather than months
A bridge or an implant?
A bridge uses the teeth on either side as support. That means those two teeth are shaped down, and once they are, they will always need to be covered. The upside is speed and no surgery: two visits, a few weeks, and nothing placed in the bone.
An implant replaces the root of the tooth on its own, so the neighbouring teeth are left untouched. It also keeps the bone in that spot working, which a bridge does not do.
An implant tends to be the better answer when the teeth on either side of the gap are healthy and untouched, because a bridge would mean cutting into two sound teeth to fix one problem. A bridge tends to be the better answer when those teeth are already heavily filled or crowned, when the bone is not there, or when surgery is not sensible for you right now. We’ll tell you which way we would lean and why.

“I first came to this dental clinic for an emergency, and they were able to fit me in same day—I was so relieved. What could have been a really stressful experience ended up being the opposite. The staff was so kind and reassuring, and the dentist made my root canal completely stress-free and painless.”

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a dental bridge?
A replacement tooth, held in place by the teeth on either side of the gap, cemented in permanently. It is not something you take out at night.
How long does a Toronto dental bridge last?
Longer when you keep the edge where it meets the gum clean, shorter when you do not. What usually ends a bridge is decay or gum trouble in one of the supporting teeth rather than the bridge itself wearing out, which is why the cleaning question below matters more than it sounds.
Should I get a bridge or an implant?
If the teeth on either side of the gap are healthy and have never been drilled, an implant is usually the better answer, because a bridge means shaping two sound teeth to replace one. If those teeth already need crowns, or your bone will not take an implant without grafting, or surgery is not sensible for you at the moment, a bridge is often the stronger choice.
Does a bridge damage the neighbouring teeth?
It changes them permanently. Enamel is removed from both so the bridge can seat over them, and from that point on those teeth stay covered.
How do I clean under a dental bridge?
Under it, not around it. Ordinary floss will not pass between the replacement tooth and the gum, so you use a floss threader or superfloss to get underneath the span, or an interdental brush or water flosser. We’ll show you on your own bridge at the fit appointment.
How many visits does a bridge take?
Two. At the first, we shape and scan the supporting teeth and fit a temporary bridge. At the second, we fit and cement the final one from our lab.
Does insurance cover dental bridges?
Most plans cover a portion of restorative work like bridges, though the percentage and the annual maximum vary by plan. We’ll check your coverage and give you an estimate before we begin.
Are Toronto dental bridges done under sedation?
They do not need it. The supporting teeth are fully numbed, so what you feel is pressure rather than pain. If dental appointments are difficult for you, we offer nitrous sedation and can arrange it beforehand.
